Winter Spice Granola
Are you ready for a seasonal crunch? Then you’ll be pleased to know that Winter Spice Granola is back on the winter menu. It’s available throughout the chillier months, usually from November until the end of February.
Winter Spice Granola is a seasonal blend of pure Scottish wholegrain jumbo oats, toasted flaked almonds, sweet and chewy jumbo flame raisins, crunchy sunflower and pumpkin seeds and warming winter spices.
I add ground spices - cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, coriander seed and cloves - which make the granola base taste and smell quite Christmassy and remind me of my favourite seasonal treat, the mince pie!
I sweeten the granola naturally with honey, flavour it with a hint of orange and slowly bake it to a delightful seasonal crunch. Winter Spice Granola is lovely for breakfast with a thick, creamy yoghurt and fresh cranberries, apples or pears.
If you’ve tried Winter Spice Granola in previous years, you’ll know that it changes slightly from year to year based on customer feedback. I’m always looking for ways to improve my products and Winter Spice Granola is no exception.
This year, I’ve tweaked the balance of ground spices. I have also dropped chopped dates from the recipe. Chopped dates are deliciously soft straight from the bag, but tended to harden to a crisp within the granola itself, detracting from the deluxe breakfast experience I was trying to create.
And do any of you remember the dried white mulberries I used a few years ago? They sound lovely and Christmassy and have quite a nice, subtle flavour. However, their delicate flavour got lost within the seasonal spices of the granola. And visually they were hard to identify, being the same colour and size as the toasted jumbo oats. They were swiftly dropped from future recipes.
I’ve kept it simple with this year’s Winter Spice Granola and the result is a tasty, crunchy, chewy, warming seasonal granola, ideal for breakfast with family and friends.
